Reconstruction of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, a popular tourist attraction in eastern Queens, is underway. City Councilman Barry Grodenchik, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and State Senator John Liu all attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the project. The project is part of a two-phase plan to improve the parkway. When completed, it will offer a more pleasant ride for travelers and residents alike. Previously known as the Long Island Motor Parkway, the Vanderbilt Motors Parkway began as America’s first limited-access, all-elevated road. Built in 1908, it stretched 48 miles from Queens to Suffolk County. Now, the former parkway is a bike path, connecting Alley Pond Park and Cunningham Park. The old Motor Parkway was once a highway for commuters, and it passed through some of Queens’ most beautiful neighborhoods. Its location in the northeast section of the city has caused some problems over the years. After the Motor Parkway was built, the Long Island State Park Commission and Bethpage Park Authority acquired portions of the ROW between Marcus Ave and New Hyde-Park Rd. In addition to this, the Long Island Jewish Medical Center also used the old Motor Parkway as an arterial road.
The road was designed by a member of the Vanderbilt family who wanted to create a paved, unobstructed route between Long Island and the South. However, the road was a popular route for Prohibition-era bootleggers and the state eventually took control of it. Today, parts of the motor parkway have been converted into recreational areas, while others serve as contemporary roadways in Long Island. A group called Motor Parkway East is working to renovate the Long Island Motor Parkway.
The first motorway on Long Island was built in 1908, and it was funded by William ‘Willie’ K. Vanderbilt II, a yachtsman, philanthropist, and transportation enthusiast. In the early days of the parkway, drivers from around the world competed for first place in the Vanderbilt Cup Race. Ultimately, the Long Island Motor Parkway has become the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, which has been in use for decades.
While the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway is no longer an active race track, it still thrives as a county road. The road extends from Dix Hills to Ronkonkoma, paralleling the Sagtikos State Parkway on the way to the Long Island Expressway.
